I feel like there is an art to booking a flight. As I’ve gotten older, I will admit that I prioritize convenience over price. So, if I have to pay a little more to get there faster, I’ll probably just do that.

Even with that, there are some things that I feel we all should do to be smarter when booking flights.

Use a Booking Tool

I always start with Google Flights when I first start looking for a flight ticket. Some people swear by Skyscanner too. I prefer Google Flights because it is easier for me to navigate. Note: Southwest prices don’t show up on Google Flights, so I always look directly on their site if flying with them. Check them both out and see which one you think fits you best.

Be Flexible

Book during weekdays, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays if possible or fly during times when most people aren’t flying.

Set Price Alerts

Set up price alerts if you are planning ahead of time. Flight prices are dynamic, so this is helpful when trying to book the lowest price.

Price Compare

After finding a flight on the booking site, go directly to the airline’s website and compare / book. It’s usually cheaper and more flexible to book directly in my experience.

Check Price

Check back (especially if within 24 hours) to see if price has dropped. Note: Southwest is one of the airlines that allows you get credit back to your account if see the price has dropped with no change fees. Let me know if there are others.

Understand Pricing Models

Understand what you are getting for the price you are paying because basic economy vs main cabin vs whatever else can be a totally different experience when flying and/or if you need to change the flight, so read the fine print.

Get Rewarded

Make sure you are signed up for the airline’s reward program. Even if it is my first time flying with an airline, I will sign up for the rewards program. You never know where these travel streets will take your airline loyalty.

Show Some Loyalty

Try to stick to one or two airlines so that you can start accumulating points or miles. I just booked my last flight completely from points because I have been loyal to Southwest. I need to do a separate post on booking with points also.

Use Points

Use credit card points to book and to save more on tickets

Choose the Best Option…For You

Connecting flights are usually cheaper, but be ok with paying for convenience.

Let me know your tips for booking a flight because I’m always looking for a deal.
