11 Ways to Travel Safely

I will be the first to admit, that when I travel, I let me hair down! I like to have a good time whenever I travel. But I also make sure that I know about the places I visit. I try to learn general facts about the culture before my ventures. Here are some somethings that are important to stay safe on your own travels.

1. Research Your Destination

Prior to your trip, research your destination thoroughly. Understand local customs, laws, and any potential safety concerns. Look up the popular local scams in the area you are traveling. The more you know, the better you can prepare.

2. Share Your Itinerary

Share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member. Make sure to include your itinerary, accommodation details, and contact information. If I am not traveling with my husband, I literally leave a print out on the kitchen board with all of my travel information.

3. Spend Extra Money

Even if you are traveling on a budget, it is wise to just spend the extra money to stay if a safer area, and to ride in reliable transportation especially if your flight is arriving late at night in a new country.

4. Travel Insurance

If it is a big trip, make sure to get travel insurance, or get a travel credit card that has it.

5. Stay Informed

Stay informed about current events and safety conditions at your destination. You can go the government website to find quick reads on what is going on.

6. Secure Your Belongings

Use the hotel’s lock box. You should keep your belongings secure by using locks or safes. Also be especially cautious in crowded places and tourist areas. I like to wear a cross body bag if I’m going into a really touristy area.

7. Keep Things Close to You

8. Be Health Conscious & Careful

Make sure you are healthy before your trip and get all your medications in order. We also often lose track of time when traveling, so make sure you are staying on top of your daily health routines by taking your vitamins, staying hydrated. And please be careful of where you eat because you can get sick from the local water or food.

9. Stay Connected

Have a working phone with an international plan. Keep a portable charger or two on hand. Keep loved ones informed about your daily whereabouts.

10. Trust Your Instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Avoid risky situations, individuals, or areas. Don’t venture out alone, especially at night into sketchy areas and instinctively feel unsafe.

11. Dress Appropriately

Research where you are going to ensure what you are wearing won’t offend the culture. Also, don’t wear flashy jewelry in destinations where you can be easily targeted. Just know where you are going, and dress accordingly.

Taking time to learn about a place is the first step to travel safely. Follow these tips, and just make sure that you are being aware of your surroundings, respectful of the culture, and knowledgeable about your destination.

Although travel is about experiencing new surroundings, it is important to prioritize safety.
